Miguel Alvarez's story began in Fullerton schools: Maple Elementary for preschool, Richman Elementary for kindergarten, Laguna Road Elementary through sixth grade, and Ladera Vista Junior High. These schools shaped who he is today, and that history is why his commitment to Fullerton's students and families is personal.
Mission
That's why Miguel has made it his life's work to ensure that no student's future is limited by where they were born, what their family can afford, or whether someone at home knows how to navigate the system. He believes every Fullerton student deserves a high-quality education, strong academic support, safe and welcoming schools, real college and career pathways, and adults who believe in their potential.
Miguel grew up in South Fullerton in an immigrant family with limited resources. He had to navigate school, college, and career largely on his own, with no roadmap and no one at home who had been through the system before him. As a first-generation college graduate, he knows firsthand what it feels like to dream big without knowing the next step. That experience became his "why," and it's the reason he's spent his career, and now his campaign, working to make sure no other student has to figure it out alone.
Miguel turned that mission into expertise. He graduated from UCLA, studying political science, education, public policy, school systems, and funding: the building blocks of how education actually works, and how it fails kids like him. He went on to earn a Master of Education, sharpening his focus on curriculum design, educational innovation, and student-centered systems.
Career & Expertise
Since then, Miguel has spent his career to improve the systems that decide whether students get access to opportunity across K-12 schools, higher education, nonprofit leadership, workforce development, and public service. His experience includes serving as Assistant Director of Undergraduate Admissions and Partnerships at UC Berkeley's Center for Educational Partnerships, leading programs in the California Community Colleges system, and serving as Assistant Director of Undergraduate Admissions and Partnerships at UC Berkeley. In every role, the work has been the same: expand access, strengthen support, build partnerships, and help students find a clear path forward.
Miguel has built a life defined by firsts, and he traces each one back to the foundation Fullerton schools gave him. He was the first in his family to graduate college, and later, the first to become a homeowner. Neither milestone was easy, but both were made possible by teachers and schools that believed in him early on and gave him the tools to build something his family had never had access to before.
That foundation is exactly why he believes opportunity should not depend on who you know or what you were born into, and it's why he's committed to making sure Fullerton schools do the same for the next generation.
That work is personal at home, too. Miguel is a proud big brother to two Troy High School graduates now in college. Helping his siblings find their own paths reinforced something he already believed: every student deserves someone in their corner.
Miguel navigated the education system with no roadmap. Fifteen years later, he's the one building the roadmap, for every Fullerton student who deserves a high-quality education, real career pathways, and a real shot at the American Dream.
